The aimed of this research was to identify and describe the strategy of students in translating English text into Bahasa Indonesia. This research investigated in the eighth semester students of English Education Study Program at STKIP PGRI Lubuklinggau, there were 45 students as the subject of this research. Moreover, descriptive qualitative method was research design applied by the researcher to conduct this research. Questionnaire and interview were used by the researcher as the instruments. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that free translation strategy became the most frequently strategy used by the students. It was showed that the highest total students’ score of free translation strategy was 555. The highest total averages in free translation strategy used by students was 3,22% of students who translated English text based on my their style/ free translation related to information background about the text. Next, it was followed by word for word translation strategy with total students’ score 541. The highest total averages was 3,22%, the students translated word by word based on dictionary meaning. Furthermore, the total students’ score in literal translation strategy was 535. There were two items of questionnaire as literal strategy used by students translation. They were: the total averages was 3,08% of students who read each sentence in translating English text, and the total averages 2,97% of students who translated sentence by sentence based on form of sentence. In conclusion, translation is one of the hardest thing to do by the students in learning English. One of way to make it easier was doing translation with applying the suitable and exact strategy for each different kinds of English text translation into Bahasa Indonesia.
